Apply for a Nurse Residency
Phase 1: Unit Orientation
You will spend 12 weeks in the Labor and Delivery with a preceptor (mentor) who will help you develop your critical thinking and clinical judgement skills.
Focus Areas
The majority of your time will be spent focusing on labor, delivery, and recovery phases.
Classroom Program
During the 12 weeks, you will complete a Labor and Delivery classroom program focusing on building a solid foundation for a career in Labor and Delivery through hands-on practice with equipment and simulations. Classes range from Labor and Delivery basics to management of more complex pregnancy conditions.
Phase 2: Home Unit Placement
Upon successful completion of the unit orientation, you will be offered a position in the Labor and Delivery department.
Shift Details
You will be assigned the night shift.
Continued Orientation
Orientation will continue for 12 to 16 more weeks and will cycle through the other areas of the unit:
- Antepartum
- Triage
- Surgery/PACU
Phase 3: Professional Development Lectures
While working in Labor and Delivery, you will attend four lecture classes to continue developing your skills.

Evidence-Based Project
At the one-year mark, you will complete an evidence-based (not research) project as a final assignment for your nurse residency.
Poster Presentation
With the help of your nurse manager and clinical mentor, you will prepare and present a poster of your project to the Unit-Based Practice Committee.
